Bai Thom Phu Quoc: Sunrise, Route and Tips
Bai Thom is located on the northeastern coast of Phu Quoc, about 35 km from Duong Dong town. Compared to busier beaches, this area retains a quieter, more natural feel with shallow waters, rows of casuarina trees, beach morning glories, and a slow coastal pace. It is an ideal spot for those who enjoy catching the sunrise, taking walks, and exploring a tranquil corner of the island’s northern region.

A Different Side of Phu Quoc Beaches
The coastline of Bai Thom stretches for nearly 2 km, featuring narrow stretches of sand and relatively shallow water. The scenery is not polished like resort areas: coastal vegetation grows naturally, the sand may contain dry leaves, and tides constantly change the shore’s shape. This unarranged layout creates its own distinct character, but it also requires visitors to prepare more thoroughly.
From the shore, you can see distant islands and mountain ranges across the bay. In the morning, the sun rises over the sea, reflecting light across the calm water. If you want to take photos, it is best to arrive early, keep a distance from creeping coastal plants, and avoid stepping on the morning glory growth areas.
When to Visit and Best Timing
The period from around November to April is typically less rainy, making travel routes and outdoor activities more favorable. However, weather on the island can change quickly. Check forecasts, wind, and rain conditions close to your departure time; do not attempt to travel along forest-edge routes after dark or during heavy rain.

Sunrise is the priority time to visit. After 9 AM, the sun intensifies quickly, and shade is not always available. If you are only visiting for a day, you can leave Duong Dong early, spend two to three hours at the beach, and head back before late afternoon.
Transportation and Preparation
From Duong Dong, you can take the Nguyen Trung Truc axis northeastward; other access routes skirt through the Ham Ninh area and forest edges. Road surface conditions can change seasonally, so maps should only be used as a reference. Prioritize clear public routes, ask locals if in doubt, and avoid unmarked trails.
- Check brakes, tires, and fuel if riding a motorbike; always wear a helmet.
- Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and trash bags.
- Do not swim far out because the area is isolated with limited lifeguard support and changing current conditions.
- Do not catch sea urchins, starfish, coral, or remove live organisms from the shore.
- Do not board boats or join fishermen’s activities without an invitation.

Responsible Travel Suggestions
Walking along the shore, watching the sunrise, and observing fishing boats are the most suitable experiences. If you visit Hon Mot or nearby coastal sections, you need to check the tide and actual access routes; do not rely on outdated information about bridges or pathways. For seafood, choose eateries with clear pricing and minimize single-use plastics.
Bai Thom is memorable not for its numerous services, but for retaining the feel of a coastline far from the center. Arriving early, preparing adequately, leaving no trash, and respecting local livelihoods are the best ways to enjoy this place without diminishing its original pristine charm.
